This is a step-by-step process of my coloring technique. The examples of art colored like this can be found here: [link] [link] and [link]
Programs that you would need are all free for download except ImageReady which comes with Photoshop. Dogwaffle 2.0 is available from the developer's site: [link] CGIllust (or the best available OpenCanvas demo) is available here: [link] The demo of CG Illust doesn't let you to save but does allow you to copy and paste your work as well as send it to a printer which can be set up as image writer of your choice(latest version of MS Office comes with a driver of one, I believe). A few things: Dogwaffle brushes look better with opacity turned down anywhere from 30% to 70%. Here I used the grass brush for fur and background. The paper texture option is under filters, artistic. You can regulate the opacity of it as well; I use 20% to 25%. Don't attempt to correct highlights or shadows in Dogwaffle, it will paint over the lines. I use Dogwaffle mainly for adding textures and color variety. It's great for randomizing brush stroke colors. Use OC or CGIllust for everything else instead. |

Somewhere in there should be "and sprinkle sugar generously and VOILA!" lol.
Do you use a mouse or a tablet - I'm curious.

I have a cheap tablet that doesn't recognize pressure that well, but it gets a lot of use anyway. Let's see, it has to be a combination of the two. I start off with tracing the sketch with the tablet into Flash. Then I zoom into the outline and try to get all the details and little corners adjusted with the mouse. Then I fill in flat colors, still Flash, mouse.
In OpenCanvas, it's mainly tablet, since it picks up the pen pressure well, but I can do it with the mouse and achieve similar results.
DogWaffle - mouse, it doesn't need that much precision.
I guess the point is, tools are just tools

Poor Erik, no one loves him. Except perhaps his hoard of screaming fangirls.
Usually I use a tablet to trace over an existing sketch or an imported scan in Flash, but it's possible to draw from scratch, you just have to zoom in and add the details at about 400% view (especially if you're drawing faces.) Good luck.
